This communication is to ensure you are aware that Pennsylvania currently has over 30 confirmed, positive cases. Today, superintendents from school districts of the Intermediate Unit 8 received information from the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the PA Department of Health regarding the existing pandemic.

Currently, the Commonwealth is allowing most school districts to make their own decisions regarding school closings. Given the speed the virus is spreading, this could suddenly change.

For now, Everett Area School District (EASD) will continue to operate on a normal schedule, however, non- essential trips, large gathering events and other unnecessary activities that would congregate large groups of people will be curtailed or cancelled.  The State has stipulated implementation of social distancing to help control the spread of this virus.

At this time, all outdoor sports will continue as scheduled.  However, public attendance could be restricted, if the situation dictates.

Three weeks ago, EASD implemented an enhanced cleaning program, and the staff continues to be diligent with cleaning measures and the sanitation of high traffic areas.  All students have been educated on health safety measures. They should understand proper hygiene and basic methods to prevent the spread of any virus, including COVID-19.

The District’s foremost priority is the safety of students, staff and our entire community. Decisions to limit or cancel gatherings will be done to protect students as well as elderly citizens and the medically at-risk populations from exposure. Local circumstances will continue to be monitored daily to determine any need for a shutdown. We will also comply with any state-wide shutdown.

The education of our students is of great importance. EASD is prepared to deliver educational services in an online platform or via written approach, in some cases.  Parents and guardians should be advised that each student has been instructed to take his/her personal learning device home. This most directly impacts students in grades K-5. Devices for grades K-5 are normally kept at school.  So, they are not insured against breakage/damage. We ask all elementary parents to take extra precaution in supporting their student(s) with the care of their personal device(s).

Presently, Bedford County has no known COVID-19 cases, but cases do surround our region.  Out-of-state and in- state travel will continue to be curbed until such time that the State has advised the virus is no longer a threat.

We will continue to update the community as circumstances evolve with this disease.    You will find the most current and up-to-date data regarding COVID-19 on the PA Department of Health or the Centers for Disease Control websites.

Again, the Administration is monitoring this crisis on a daily basis and does not take lightly cancelling important events. Our first priority must be the safety and well-being of our children and this community.
